CHOOSING YOUR TEACHERS: HANDPICK YOUR INFLUENCES

Published on

At some point in life, there comes an understanding that influence is not accidental. While early years are shaped by circumstance, maturity brings choice. The voices that guide a person, the ideas they return to, and the perspectives they allow to take root are often selected — consciously or not.

Not all teachers are found in classrooms, and not all lessons come from family. Influence appears in many forms: a conversation held once and remembered for years, a friend whose presence offers steadiness, a mentor who models discernment, or even a child whose way of seeing the world quietly reshapes understanding. Each encounter leaves an imprint.

Because of this, discernment matters. The people one keeps close, the counsel one returns to, and the environments one remains in all contribute to who a person becomes. Support systems that encourage clarity, growth, and self-respect tend to strengthen what already exists within. Those rooted in misalignment or stagnation often do the opposite.

Over time, it becomes clear that influence is something to be handled with care. Choosing teachers is not about proximity or familiarity, but about alignment. It is about recognizing which voices sharpen thought, steady character, and encourage growth — and which ones do not.

In the end, no one is confined to a single way of thinking or being. Influence can be reconsidered. Perspectives can be refined. The teachers one listens to can change.

What shapes a life is rarely chance. More often, it is choice.

This is so good! I’m at the point in my life now where I will absolutely not let bad influences into my life. Let that happen for far too long. What you said here is so important!
